I read through my psych textbook until I felt comfortable with what type of amnesia I would have (Systemsing). I also found the following statement: “In the real world, head injuries don’t cure functional amnesia.”

I'm so glad my textbook cleared that little mess up. I could result in some very misguided psych majors.

In the real world, is there a kind of amnesia which can make you forget, say, who you are, without forgetting how to walk?

Yeah, there's a ton of different types of amnesia because there are so many different perticular parts of the brain that control memory. It would just be a matter of what part of your brain got fucked up and what other parts are fine.

I'd have to disagree with you on a fundamental point here;

Hitting things improves everything.

To quote Duke, from the documentary Rocky Balboa, "So, what we'll be calling on is good ol’ fashion blunt force trauma. Horsepower. Heavy-duty, cast-iron, piledriving punches that will have to hurt so much they'll rattle his ancestors. Every time you hit him with a shot, it's gotta feel like he tried kissing the express train. Yeah! Let's start building some hurtin' bombs!"

Blunt force trauma solved Rocky's problems. Also, I've kissed the express train, and it tastes delicious.

Hast thou not struck thine television set for the purposes of inducing functionality?

Hast thou not beaten yon juvenile seal for the purposes of inducing amusement?

Did Luke Skywalker not strike a control panel with his lightsaber to crush a rancor?

Did Oh-Dae Su not beat 60 men into incapacitation with but a hammer?

Did Joe Pesci not crush the insubordination of an insulting mobster underheel?

Everything can and should be beaten...

I've experienced that before. There is more than one treatment for amnesia out there depending on the root cause of the memory loss. The success of these treatments varies and is still an area of science that is a work in progress.Treatment for amnesia that is based on psychological causes tends to rely heavily upon counseling techniques, hypnotherapy and in some cases drug therapy.
